The Arderns adjust to 1970s life, a time when supermarkets had become Britain's shopping destination of choice and corner shops were beginning to feel the pinch. The family's experience begins with a grand opening designed to compete against the onslaught of the supermarkets. While Sam dons his chicken costume to drum up trade for the shop's 'cheap cheap' prices, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield cuts the ribbon to open the doors. But as a newly self-service operation, Dave must completely transform his approach to keep the tills ringing.

The Arderns go back in time to run a corner shop through the 80s and 90s. Selling everything from Ice Magic to lottery tickets, they learn how life behind the counter reflects two decades of change.
